The Word of the WeekEvery week our class finds meaning for a word. I really enjoyed the word intentional because students reflected on goals and purpose. We journeyed through intentionality and what it means to have passion for something. Students struggled to think of their own lives, but we started a conversation. I always bring it back to "why."
Why do you get out of bed or go to school? Why do you engage with friends, family, hobbies? What makes you happy to think of the future? Even thinking about "why" can be inspiring and exciting! |

I start with a scan that shows a writing piece by a student that is shy but reflective. I leave the ending scan to the end in order to reveal that writing is not about formalities. Writing is about going beyond the surface of a topic and make it you!
Obviously the final product of writing is important; however, I always emphasize to my students about the process of learning. I believe that learning is about critical thinking and developing your own voice and opinion. When students learn, they take risks and speak up as a member of society. The assessment and work sample I chose spoke to me because these students went on a journey through writing. I do not give tests for assessments because I think learning cannot be concrete. During my first semester as a teacher, I received a lot of feedback about my class. I definitely was grateful to improve. On the other hand, sometimes I felt like I had to conform to strategies and philosophies that I didn't agree with regarding how to address students. I decided to embrace themes of building relationships and focusing on growth of learning. Now I see joy in feedback because I am centered by my values and beliefs. |
